The Lancaster Bruins forged an early 8-0 lead and stayed on top for an 11-6 win over Aiken to remain alive in the Class AAAA Upper State baseball playoffs on Saturday afternoon at Doomsday Corner.LHS senior hurler Nick Ferguson notched the win, going 5.2 innings. He allowed three runs, three hits and two walks. Ferguson fanned four. Ferguson aided his cause with three hits, including a solo home run, and drove in three runs.Michael Catoe worked 1.1 innings and yielded three runs, three hits and a walk. He struck out two.Ferguson’s solo homer in the LHS first inning put the Bruins up 1-0 and they took charge with a five-run second inning for a 6-0 lead. In the LHS five-run second, Trevor Hammond had a two-run single and Will Gaston added a RBI-hit.Aiken made it 8-3 in the top of the sixth, but LHS countered with a three-run sixth as Ross Maiden had a two-out, two-run single.Maiden had two hits and drove in two runs. Jimmie Jordan supplied two hits. Hammond had a hit and drove in two runs, while Gaston had a hit and a RBI. Bryan Gainer also had a hit for LHS, 11-12-1.The Bruins face the Dorman-Laurens loser on Monday in an elimination game.Dorman tops LHSThe Lancaster Bruins dropped a 9-6 loss to Dorman of Spartanburg in the opening round of the Class AAAA Upper State baseball playoffs on Thursday night.Lancaster, at one point, held a 6-3 lead on the Cavaliers, but DHS answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added two in the sixth to seal the three-run win.Evan Byrd, who worked four frames, took the loss. He allowed seven runs, eight hits, five walks and six earned runs. Michael Catoe worked two innings and yielded two runs, a hit, two walks and an earned run. Catoe struck out two. Byrd had two strikeouts.Josh Warfield led the LHS attack with two hits and drove in five runs. Ross Maiden had a hit and drove in a run.Brion Strothers supplied three hits. Catoe, Trevor Hammond, Will Gaston, Byrd and Rico Robinson each had a hit. Andrew Cureton scored a run.AJ falls to DillonThe Andrew Jackson Vols dropped a 16-1 loss to Dillon in the opening round of the Class AA Lower State playoffs on Thursday night at the DHS Wildcats’ field.Lance Horton was the starter and took the loss.Corey Ingram led the AJ offense with a double. Greg Cook chipped in a single. Chad Dicola tallied the Vols’ run.AJ is the fourth seed out of Conference VIII-AA.Warriors face WSThe Indian Land Warriors ventured to Ware Shoals for an elimination game in the Class A Upper State playoffs on Saturday, but the game was completed after The News’ deadline for Sunday.IL opened the playoffs, dropping a 10-9 loss to Fox Creek on Thursday. The Warriors qualified for the playoffs as the fourth-seeded team in Conference III-A.BHS falls shortBuford made a gallant run, but fell short in a 21-20 home loss to Manning in the Class AA Lower State playoffs on Saturday. The loss ended the Jackets’ season at 15-7. BHS, down 21-11 in its final at-bat, scored nine runs and had the bases loaded when the final out was made. Christian Dickson took the loss.Joseph Wright led BHS with three hits, including two doubles, three RBIs and scored three runs. Dickson had three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs. Blake Larrimore had three hits. Gavin Flynn notched two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs.Donald Kirkley had two hits, including a triple, drove in three runs and scored two runs. Dustin Carnes had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run. Dwayne Ray had a hit and drove in three runs. Colt Ellis had a hit, scored twice and drove in two runs. Cheyne Horne scored twice and drove in a run. Jacob Jamison tallied a run.Buford, the Conference VIII-AA runner-up, opened the playoffs with a 2-0 loss to Marion High School on Thursday.
