LAURENS – It wasn’t a good day on Saturday, Feb. 16 for the Lancaster Bruins as they were shutout at the Class AAAA Upper State championship tournament by not qualifying anyone for this weekend’s individual state tournament at the Anderson Civic Center.
Lancaster High School took five grapplers to the Upper State tournament.
The majority of those Bruins who fell to qualify did so by losing in the consolation semifinals.
A win there, would have allowed them to move on to the state tournament.
“Overall it was a good team effort,” said Lancaster High School wrestling coach Leon Boulware. “Everybody came within winning a match of qualifying. We have to improve in certain areas. We have got to get stronger and comeback next year.”
The top four from each of the 14 weight classes qualified for the state tournament.
Fort Mill and York both qualified six wrestlers, while South Pointe qualified three, Clover qualified two and Nation Ford qualified one.
The Lancaster High School wrestlers along with other Bruins winter sports athletes will be honored at the annual Lancaster High winter sports awards on Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the school auditorium.
The Bruins wrestlers were 13-7 under second-year head coach Leon Boulware.
