Details are limited regarding an accident on Interstate 77 that claimed the life of a Lancaster County teen Monday.

Jorge Lopez, 17, died on the scene following a five-vehicle wreck about 9:30 p.m. in Rock Hill, said York County interim Coroner Sabrina Gast.

The accident happened at the 82.5-mile marker on the northbound side of I-77, according to Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson of the S.C. Highway Patrol. He didn't say what vehicles were involved or what caused the wreck.

Lopez, who had a Ransom Road address, died from multiple blunt force trauma, Gast said. Lopez was a front-seat passenger in his vehicle.

Three other people involved were injured and taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Robinson said. Their names and conditions were unavailable Tuesday afternoon.

The Highway Patrol doesn't believe alcohol was a factor, said Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin of the Highway Patrol. Gaskin added that Lopez may have been fatally hit while trying to exit his vehicle after an initial one-vehicle collision.

"It's possible that he was struck by one or more vehicles there directly afterward," Gaskin said.

No charges have been filed in this case. The Highway Patrol's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating.
