Investigators are working to identify a body found along a rural road in the southern part of the county Monday night.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office investigators found the body after a call from investigators with both the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the Stroud Area Regional Police in Pennsylvania, according to a sheriff’s office press release issued Tuesday.
The team of Charlotte and Pennsylvania authorities said they recently arrested a person in Charlotte who was in possession of a stolen vehicle. The arrested person later provided the location of a body that was dumped in a wooded area off Mt. Carmel Road, the release said.
Investigators from all three agencies searched along the road and discovered human remains in a wooded area near 4832 Mt. Carmel Road, the release said. Sheriff’s office investigators said the remains appear to have been there for several weeks.
Lancaster County Chief Deputy Coroner Karla Deese confirmed that a body was found
set back from the road.
Deese said the person has not been identified and she could not say if it was a man or woman.
“We do not know who it is,” Deese said Tuesday. “We have an autopsy scheduled for 9 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) and hopefully we’ll get a possible ID from that.”
Lancaster County and Pennsylvania authorities are working together and will attend the autopsy, the release said.
Sheriff’s office Maj. Matt Shaw could not comment Tuesday afternoon on whether this case was connected to that of a Pennsylvania man reported missing last month.
Joseph Devivo, 87, has been missing from his Pocono Mountains home since at least Feb. 25 and his car was found near Charlotte the same day.
