Lancaster County school board named Beth Blum the new principal at Indian Land Elementary School on Tuesday.
Blum, who is now principal at North Hartsville Elementary School, is bringing nine years of administration experience to the post. She has been in education for 20 years.
"I feel like I've got the experience and the love of the children," Blum said. "I think those are the things needed to be an effective administrator."
The principal position at ILES arose after the elementary and middle schools split in January. For years, the schools had been housed in one building.
David McDonald, who was serving as principal of both schools, will take over solely at the middle school in the fall.
"The middle school was his first choice. Knowing that, we advertised the elementary job," District Superintendent Dr. Gene Moore said. "It worked out fine. She (Blum) will be a good fit.'
Blum will meet the school's faculty next week. Her first official day is July 1.
"I think it's going to be a wonderful place to work," Blum said. "I'm really looking forward to it."
New HR director hired
The board also named a new human resources director for the district.
Gwendolyn Conner will succeed Mitch Lucas, who is retiring this year after eight years at the post.
Conner will come to the district after serving as human resources manager for Thomas & Betts Corp. in Lancaster. Before that, she was a human resources consultant for Dupont-Savannah River Co. in Aiken.
"Mrs. Conner is a good addition to our staff," the superintendent said. "She'll bring a business perspective to the role, which will be different."
