Though his father and grandfather were law enforcement officers, Craig Bailey never saw himself following in their footsteps.
Bailey’s father, T.J. Bailey, worked for the Lancaster and Rock Hill police departments, and his grandfather, the late Harvey Coates, worked for the State Law Enforcement Division.
“I never wanted to get into law enforcement,” Bailey said.
Bailey, 41, went to work at a company manufacturing high-voltage transformers. It was good money, but Bailey said it was mind-numbingly boring.
“I was stuck in a building all day,” Bailey said. “It drove me nuts.”
After three years working at the plant, Bailey decided to give law enforcement a try.
He’s been with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years and has served as captain over investigations for the past 10 years.
“I like the variety of the work,” Bailey said. “It’s never the same.”
Bailey assigns cases to the sheriff’s office narcotics officers and detectives. He evaluates cases and organize case files for court. He also participates in investigations.
Bailey was recently named Lancaster County’s Employee of the Quarter.
“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “There’s a lot of people in this county that I think do a lot more than I do.”
Lancaster County Sheriff-elect Barry Faile said the county is among the top five in the state for its clearance rate for investigative cases.
“That speaks pretty well of Bailey,” Faile said. “He’s always there and he doesn’t mind coming out and working cases.”
Bailey and his wife, Amy, have four sons, Patrick, 17, Dustin, 14, Cole, 14 and Grant, 8.
The family spends a lot of time going to the boys’ various ball games. When Bailey isn’t working or attending ball games, he tries to find time to ride his four horses.
Bailey joined Kevin Granata, Capt. Monty Craig and Irene Plyler as Employees of the Quarter in 2008.
Plyler, who is County Administrator Steve Willis’ assistant and County Council clerk, was recently named Employee of the Year at the county’s annual banquet.
