AJ, BHS split in tourney

County teams are 1-1 in Sandlapper Invitational

Buford and Andrew Jackson split games in their first two days of play in the Sandlapper Invitational prep baseball tournament.

The Jackets rallied for an 11-10 win over Brookland-Cayce of Columbia in first-round play Saturday, April 12, but then dropped a 9-1 loss to Pelion at Pelion High School on Monday, April 14.

AJ downed Batesburg-Leesville, 3-2 in first-round play Saturday, April 12 at Gilbert High School and then fell to Bamberg-Ehrhardt, 3-2 in extra innings at Pelion on Monday, April 14.

Bamberg-Ehrhardt scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to edge the Volunteers on Monday afternoon.

Trey Rollings, in 2.1 innings, took the loss. Dustin Eddins, who went 5.2 frames, was the AJ starter.

Kipp Rollings and Trey Rollings each had two hits to lead the AJ attack.

Corey Walters and Heath Gandy each had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run. Eddins had a hit for the Vols.

On Monday at Pelion, Buford fell to the host Panthers, 9-1.

Troy Cunningham had two hits and a stolen base to lead the Jackets’ offense.

Gage Hinson, Kholby Pate and Brady Horton each had a hit. Austin Pate tallied a run.

Andrew Caskey, in 3.1 innings, took the loss. Nick Bowers worked 2.2 frames for the Jackets.

Third-round play in the Sandlapper Invitational was rained out on Tuesday, April 15. The tournament caps play Wednesday, April 16.

Andrew Jackson meets Gilbert at 10 a.m. at Gilbert on Wednesday, while Buford will face Edisto at  Pelion at 2:30 p.m. The AJ jayvees play Gilbert at 12:15 p.m.

Volunteers, Jackets win

Andrew Jackson opened play in the Sandlapper Tournament play, taking a 3-2 win over Batesburg-Leesville on Saturday, April 12.

Gunnar Lucas, in five frames of work, was the winning pitcher. He allowed three hits and no runs with six strikeouts.

Eric Miles notched the AJ save, yielding three hits and two runs.

Dustin Eddins led the offense with a hit and two runs batted in. Miles had a hit and tallied a run. Lucas and Kipp Rollings each had a hit.

Corley Faulkenberry scored a run and had a RBI. Trey Rollings tallied a run in the Volunteers’ victory.

Buford opened its tournament play, rallying for an 11-10 comeback win over Brookland-Cayce High School of Columbia on Saturday, April 12.

The Jackets, down 10-2 in the sixth inning, ignited for nine runs in the bottom of the frame to take the victory over the Bearcats.

Troy Cunningham drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Daniel Mackey for the winning run.

Austin Caskey led the Jackets’ attack with three hits, a walk, a RBI and scored a run.

Troy Cunningham had a hit, with two RBIs and scored a run.

Druw Rollings had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run. Evan Flynn had a hit and drove in a run. Austin Pate supplied a hit.

Mackey reached base three times with a walk and was twice hit by a pitch and scored three runs. Scotti Moser had a RBI and tallied a run.

Brady Horton tallied two runs, while Johnathan Hill, Blake Langley and Autry Blackmon each scored a run.

Blackmon, in three innings of mound work, was the winner. He allowed five runs, five hits and a walk. He fanned one.

James Gardner hurled three innings and gave up five runs, five hits and two walks. He whiffed two.

Braves edge Jackets

Buford dropped a 3-2 road loss to Cheraw in Region IV-AA play on Friday, April 11.

Evan Flynn led the BHS offense with two hits, a RBI and scored a run.

Kholby Pate had a hit and drove in a run. Austin Pate and Scotti Moser each had a hit.

Troy Cunningham had a walk and was hit by a pitch. He scored a run and had a stolen base.

Gage Hinson took the loss in 4.2 innings of work, yielding three runs, three earned runs, five hits and two walks. He fanned two.

Trevor Cauthen went 1.1 innings and allowed a hit.

Warriors win

Indian Land improved its non-region baseball mark to 10-5 with a 10-0 win over Queensland in five innings on Monday, April 14 at the IL baseball field.

Derian Gueldner led the IL offense with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Chris Cantrell ripped a double in IL’s nine-hit attack.

Chris Cantrell, 4-1, went three innings and allowed a hit and struck out four. Chuck Webb went two innings, fanning four and allowing a hit.

Noah Richter led Queensland with two singles.

Joel McGoldrick  took the loss.

Indian Land visits Forest Hill of Union County, N.C., on Monday, April 21.

Bruins fall to Clover

Lancaster dropped a 3-0 Region III-AAAA road loss to Clover High School on Monday, April 14.

Byron Haigler took the loss, allowing three runs. He notched three strikeouts.

Austin Richardson led the Lancaster offense with two hits. Cooper Ledbetter and Brooks Viola each had a hit.

Lancaster was coming off a 9-6 home win over York on Friday, April 11 at Doomsday Corner.

Lancaster returns to region play on Tuesday, April 22 when the Bruins travel to Rock Hill to face the Bearcats.
