BUFORD – A familiar face at Buford High School is taking on a new role.
Jackets’ head football coach Mike Wells, a 28-year veteran of coaching at the Lancaster County Class AA high school, is BHS’s new athletic director.
Wells, a Ware Shoals native, takes over the Jackets’ athletic director duties after Buford High School principal Jonathan Phipps handled the chores last year.

Former Indian Land High standout football player Kamaal McIlwain just signed to play with the Atlanta Falcons. McIlwain, who played for Newberry College, was one of 22 free agents who signed with the Falcons, according to the Falcons website.

The Lancaster Dixie Baseball Ozone all-stars made it three straight wins to stay alive in the Ozone state tournament at Patriots Park in Sumter on Wednesday night.
Lancaster scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge Greenwood, 5-4, to stay alive in the double-elimination state tournament.
The game Wednesday was originally set for Tuesday, but was postponed by rain.
Lancaster’s Ozone stars scored the winning run as hustling Spencer Funderburke dashed home from third base on a passed ball.

Lancaster Speedway will host the NDRA Road Show for the NDRA GM Performance Late Models on Saturday night.
Leading the charge in the NDRA Road Show points will be “Kid Quick” Zack Mitchell. Mitchell captured the last Road Show win at Friendship Speedway on July 16. Coming in second in points is Steve Hendren seeking to capture the win Saturday and gain some ground on Mitchell in the points standings.

Steven Neff is officially a member of the San Francisco Giants’ organization.
Neff, a former Lancaster High School and Lancaster American Legion Post 31 baseball star, joined the Giants’ organization Friday when he signed with the 2010 World Champions in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Lancaster Dixie Baseball Ozone all-stars stayed alive with their second win of the state tournament at Sumter’s Patriots Park where the locals topped Pine View of Columbia, 4-3 on Monday night.
Eric Hall, who worked five innings, was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts. He allowed three hits. Christian Sinclair, who worked an inning, earned the save with two strikeouts.
Neal Taylor paced the Lancaster offense with a two-run home run and a double. Hall also drilled a double for the winners.

Following the annual Aquatics meet, the Lancaster County team, Makos and Tigers, honored their top swimmers for the 2011 season.
The Lancaster County swim team was split to have two teams this season.
“We had a great season and we felt it was a great decision to split the teams and form two teams,” said Lancaster County Aquatics Director Midenna Anderson.
The awards were presented at an ice cream party for both teams.

The Columbus Parker Track Club had 23 athletes to qualify for the National Junior Olympics at Lucy C. Laney Stadium in Augusta, Ga., on June 23-26.
The CPTC, a Lancaster area youth track club, earned 34 medals in the competition.
