Jackets’ baseball hopes high for 2016

Buford High School baseball hopes are high as the Jackets enter the 2016 season.
The Jackets, 25-2 last spring, return a strong cast from the 2015 team which went unbeaten during regular-season play and finished as the Region IV-AA champion.
BHS coach Eric Funderburk, in his seventh season at his prep alma mater, returns a strong cast, which includes a returning starter at every position but two.

Playoffs begin Wednesday

Vols head county trio in AA boys playoffs

Boys Class AA Upper State playoff action opens tonight with three county teams launching their postseason quests for state hoops crowns.
The Andrew Jackson boys of coach Danny Wright will be at home to face Columbia in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
The Volunteers are fresh off winning the Region IV-AA regular-season title with a 70-54 victory over Lancaster County rival Indian Land.
The Vols, 16-4, went 10-2 in region play, and earned the league crown with two regular-season wins over the Warriors, who finished as the region runners-up.

Buford High School senior football star LaDarius “LP” Parker quite likely won’t forget Valentine’s Day, 2016.
Parker devoted a small, but significant part of the day, ensuring he will continue doing something he loves in the coming years.
Parker, on Sunday afternoon, signed to play college football at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.
Parker made his choice official, signing with the Indians in the BHS conference room at the Lancaster County Class AA school as family, friends and coaches watched.

AJ’s Brown signs with Pioneers

Andrew Jackson High School golf standout Caleb Brown is taking his game to the next level.
Brown, entering his fifth season playing prep golf for the Volunteers, will be competing on the collegiate level after signing with Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg.
Brown signed with the Pioneers, a NJCAA Region 10 member, on Feb. 3 in the AJ High media center.
“I think Spartanburg Methodist is a good college golf program and I think I will continue to do well there.

SPHS sweeps Lancaster

Stallions’ charge foils Lady Bruins in OT

ROCK HILL – The Lancaster Lady Bruins won the regular-season Region III-AAA war, but fell in the final battle before heading to the Class AAA girls basketball playoffs.
The LHS girls, the defending Class AAA state champions, will enter the postseason off a regular-season road loss – a 71-67 overtime defeat at the hands of region rival South Pointe.
The Lady Stallions, shelled by the host LHS Lady Bruins, 64-48 on Tuesday night, rallied for the four-point comeback win in OT Friday night at SPHS.

Vols net region crowns

KERSHAW – Host Andrew Jackson used a strong finish to capture the Region IV-AA boys basketball championship in a 70-54 win over Indian Land on Friday night at the packed Volunteers’ gym.
The AJ boys, rated fifth in the latest Class AA boys state poll, earned the region crown with a fast finish.
AJ, down 44-42 in a hoops battle with the Warriors, ignited on a 28-10 surge in the final eight minutes to seal the 70-54 comeback win over the IL boys.
The game was a seesaw contest early on, with AJ leading 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.

AJ girls prevail in 54-47 win over IL for region title

KERSHAW – Andrew Jackson’s Lady Volunteers wrapped up the Region IV-AA girls championship with an unbeaten record, but the Indian Land Lady Warriors made them earn the court jewel.
The Lady Vols, in a battle of state-ranked Class AA teams, prevailed in a 54-47 win over the IL girls before a packed AJ gym Friday night.
The AJ girls, 19-3, 12-0, posted a 70-61 road win over the Lady Warriors on Jan. 19.
AJ entered as the state’s third-ranked team in Class AA girls, while Indian Land was ninth and the result was a hardwood battle to the wire.

IL takes two at BHS

Warriors sweep Jackets, keep region crown hopes alive

Indian Land swept Buford and kept alive its Region IV-AA basketball titles hopes with the Warriors’ two road wins over the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night.
The ninth-ranked Lady Warriors finished strong for a 47-33 win over the Lady Jackets and the IL boys followed with a tough 68-60 win over BHS to seal the sweep.
Indian Land, with the two wins at BHS, heads to rival Andrew Jackson for a pair of region hardwood showdowns with the Volunteers.
The boys game at AJ will decide the region crown, with the winner taking the regular-season championship.

LHS teams sweep South Pointe

Junior Bruins teams capture region titles

The Lancaster Junior Bruins’ basketball teams wrapped up Region III-AAA crowns with impressive road hoops sweeps Monday night at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill.
The Lady Bruins posted a 46-34 overtime win and the Junior Bruins notched a 45-37 victory in the second game.
The Junior Bruins, who finished 11-3, 9-1, were paced by Roshawn McGriff’s 20 points.
Ty Thompson netted eight and Majae Ingram scored six. Desmond Stowers hit five points.

Elizabeth Scott becomes Lady Vols’ all-time scorer

KERSHAW – Andrew Jackson High has a new queen of Lady Volunteers’ courts points.
Lady Vols veteran player Elizabeth Scott netted two second-half free throws in the AJ girls’ 61-37 win over Chesterfield to earn her the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Scott, entering the Tuesday game, needed 17 points to tie the mark, which was held by former AJ girls hoops star Lorraine Truesdale.
Scott scored 18 points, with her second foul shot on a second-half bonus free throw giving her the new mark.
