Buford edges Darlington, falls to Latta

Jackets split in tourney

Buford split two baseball games to open play in the Cheraw Diamond Challenge at Cheraw High School on Monday.
The Jackets rallied to post a 4-3 comeback win over Darlington, but dropped a 9-0 loss to Latta at CHS.
The Jackets, in the one-run win over the DHS Falcons, trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but rallied for a run to tie the game to force extra innings and BHS scored the winning run in the sixth inning.  The tournament games are regulation five innings as opposed to seven innings for regular-season games.

AJ soccer making strides with new system

First-year Andrew Jackson High School boys’ soccer coach Alex Tarque said his team is making strides as the Vols learn a new system.
“Our players are adjusting really well to the new system,” Tarque said. “I am pleased with them.
“I like the attitude  of our players and they want to learn and improve,” Tarque said.
The AJ offense has key players in senior striker John Ware, freshman center midfielder Jared Truesdale and sophomore Bryce Phillips.

Lady Bruins lace Lady Warriors in home win

Host Lancaster rolled to a 15-5 win over Class AA foe Indian Land on Wednesday night.
DeAsia Fisher led the Lady Bruins’ offense with three hits, scored three runs and drove in three runs. Jada Ames drilled two hits, drove in four runs, scored three runs and drew a walk.
Ariana Ealy had two hits, three RBIs and tallied a run. Gracie Revels drilled a hit, scored four runs and drove in a run.
Alexus Lowery and Sydney Cauthen each had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run. Jordan Pomnitz had a hit.

Lady Bruins key North in all-star game win

Coach Ronnie Robinson said he was proud of the Lady Bruins’ effort in the annual North-South All-Star basketball game at Lexington High School on Saturday.
Robinson, an assistant coach on the North team, saw the Upstate stars take a 78-65 win over the South.
Lancaster High Lady Bruins’ senior stars Malia Rivers and Keyotta Garris played on the winning North team. Rivers hit four points in the 13-point victory.
“I thought Malia and Keyotta played well and represented us with solid play,” Robinson said.

Bruins net 2-1 soccer region road win over SPHS Stallions

The Lancaster High School boys soccer team posted its first win over South Pointe since the 2011 campaign, taking a 1-0 win over the host Stallions.
Bruins’ freshman Christian Diaz, off a Tyler Deese assist on a free kick, tallied the lone goal of the match.
LHS keeper Ben Rivers posted the shutout.
Lancaster improved to 5-4, 4-0 in region play.
Lancaster visits Clinton to face the Red Devils tonight.
Vols fall to Cycs
Andrew Jackson, on March 9, traveled over to Chester and brought back a 3-1 win.

Bruins seek to rebound on diamond

Lancaster dipped to 7-3, 3-2 in region play, after dropping a 4-0 road baseball loss to Broome High School in Spartanburg on Tuesday night.
The Centurions snapped a scoreless draw in the fifth inning with three runs and added a single score in the sixth inning for the shutout win over Lancaster.
Bruins’ senior Neil Taylor, in five frames, allowed two hits, three runs, one earned run, and four walks. Taylor tallied five strikeouts.
Chris Sinclair hurled a third of an inning and yielded a run on two walks.

AJ golfers stay unbeaten

The Andrew Jackson High School golf team pushed its links mark to 19-0 on the season, sweeping a tri-match at the Timberlake Country Club in Chapin on Tuesday afternoon.
The Vols posted a 159 with host Chapin at 175 and Cardinal Newman at 194.
AJ senior ace Logan Sowell, a College of Charleston golf signee, shot a one-under 34 to take medalist honors on the par-35 golf course.
Emily Cox posted a 39 and Chandler Norville had a 41. Caleb Brown, headed to Spartanburg Methodist College to play for the Pioneers next season, rounded out the AJ scores with a 45.

Meet set for April 2

Bruins host Vols in lift-a-thon

The Lancaster High School football team will hold its second annual lift-a-thon on April 2 when LHS hosts Andrew Jackson High at 10 a.m. in the Bruins gym.
The competition will include bench press.
“Our off-season workouts have gone well and we’re pleased with the progress,” LHS coach Bobby Collins said. “Our players have put in the time and worked hard since our 2015 season ended.

Lady Warriors blank Vols for soccer victory

The Indian Land Lady Warriors soccer team improved to 12-1 on the season with a 7-0 Region IV-AA home win over the Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers on Monday night.
The Lady Warriors held a 5-0 lead at the half on the way to the victory.
Nia Pressley tallied two goals, while Reagan Hunter, Abby Myers, C.C. Thompson, Kailee Erwin and Kelsey Long each scored for the IL girls.
Myers, Long and Thompson each had an assist for IL, which outshot AJ, 25-0.
Emma Thompson notched the shutout.

AJ unbeaten with golf wins over CHS, L-E

The Andrew Jackson High golf team stayed perfect on the season – 17-0 – with a pair of wins at the Camden Country Club on Monday.
The Volunteers, 6-0 in region play, shot a 149 to down Class AAA foe Camden (171) and Class AAAA Lugoff-Elgin (223).
Logan Sowell, the AJ senior ace, shot a 33 on the par-35 course. Sowell was followed by Chandler Norville with a 37, Caleb Brown’s 39 and Emily Cox with a 40.
Mason Sowell had a 41 and Dakota Roberts carded a 50.
