Vols notch two wins over Lions

KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson basketball teams returned to play after the holiday break and swept Class A foe Lewisville to conclude non-region play.
The 9-3 Lady Vols, ranked fifth in the latest Class AA girls state poll, rolled to a 73-31 win and the AJ boys posted a 75-41 victory.
The AJ girls used a fast start to notch their 42-point win.
AJ senior Summer Vick sparked the Lady Vols early, netting 15 of her 17 points in the opening half.
The Lady Vols, up 24-10 after one period, held a 40-16 lead at the half.

LHS downs Monroe

Bruins sweep Redhawks

Lancaster rolled in its return to the hardwood Jan. 5 in the LHS gym.
The Bruins, capping non-region play, ripped the Monroe Redhawks to open the 2016 portion of their schedule following the holiday break.
The Lady Bruins topped the Lady Redhawks, 62-41 and the LHS boys rolled to a 50-30 win over the MHS boys.
In both games, Lancaster started slow, but picked up the pace to post double-digit wins.
In the girls game, Lancaster, ranked No. 3 in the latest Class AAA girls state poll, used a strong finish to post the 21-point victory.

Cougars’ Bethea signs with USCL

The University of South Carolina Lancaster women’s volleyball program, which is entering its second year of play, has a special link to Carolina Christian Academy Cougars’ star volleyball player Mary Bethea.
Bethea, a key member of the unbeaten 2015 CCA state champion volleyball team, has signed to play with the Lancers, and in doing so is the program’s first recruit signee.
Bethea signed with the Lancers in December after going through the recruiting process.

Warriors cap play with win over Cavs

Indian Land High School boys basketball coach Nate Smith likely had a happy New Year.
The Warriors’ veteran hoops coach was tired after a busy holiday tournament season on the hardwood, but also pleased with his IL squad, which started the 2015-16 campaign at 0-5, but is now 5-7 after a 5-2 finish to the 2015 portion of the squad’s schedule.
The Warriors put the finishing touches on their 2015 play with a 53-45 win over Cuthbertson High School for fifth place in the Service Plumbing Holiday Classic at Cox Mill High School in Concord, N.C., on Dec. 30.

Two star athletes, who rank among the state’s best in their respective sports, are The Lancaster News’ 2015 Athletes of the Year.
Andrew Jackson High senior star golfer Logan Sowell earned the honor for male sports, while Lancaster High School senior basketball ace Malia Rivers reaped the honor for female sports.
Rivers led the Lancaster High girls to a 27-0 record and the Class AAA state championship and along the way reaped her share of hardwood laurels.

AJ golf star

Sowell second in Wallace field

Andrew Jackson High School standout senior golfer Logan Sowell led a solid group of Lancaster County golfers who competed in the 38th annual Phil Wallace Holiday Classic at the YMCA golf course in Shelby, N.C., on Dec. 28.
Reed Bentley, a Wellford golfer, carded a one-under 71 to edge Sowell, who shot an even-par 72 in the tourney.

Warriors rebound for win

The Indian Land Warriors got back on track in a big way Dec. 29 in the Service Plumbing Holiday Classic at Cox Mill High School in Concord, N.C.
The Warriors, coming off a 60-40 opening round loss to Xaverian of Brooklyn, N.Y., rebounded in impressive fashion with a 66-47 win over Porter Ridge High School of Indian Trail, N.C.
The Warriors, 4-7, opened strong and cruised to the 19-point win over the Pirates, who were coming off a 76-38 first-round loss to the Hough Huskies of Cornelius, N.C.

Former LHS coach caps stellar career

Roscoe retires for second time at NGHS

Former Lancaster High School football coach Johnny Roscoe is retiring from coaching for a second time at Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro, and this departutre appears to be for good.
Roscoe, according to reports, is retiring from coaching to his farm in eastern Lancaster County.
A Hartsville native, Roscoe announced his retirement  Dec. 18 as the Nighthawks head football coach, building the football program from its inception to a football power in the Tar Heel State.

IL drops opener in Cox Mill tourney

Indian Land High opened play in the Service Plumbing Holiday Classic, dropping a 60-40 loss to Xaverian of Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 28.
The Clippers took control in the second half as they outscored the Warriors, 33-16 for the 20-point win.
IL, 3-7, led 15-10 after one period, but the Clippers used a 17-9 second-period charge to take a 27-24 lead at the break.
Xaverian ignited in the third period to take control for a 42-29 spread.
The Clippers sealed the issue with an 18-11 surge in the final period to wrap up the victory.

BHS girls split in holiday play

The Buford Lady Jackets capped play in the Sweet 16 tournament in Orangeburg with a 53-44 win over Hunter Kinard Tyler on Dec. 27.  The game was tied at 38-all after three periods, but Buford used a decisive 15-6 run in the final period to take the nine-point win over the Lady Trojans.
Lady Jackets’ senior standout Gabby Davis, who reached the 1,000-point career mark in the two-day tournament, paced the winners with 31 points.  Davis hit 18 points in the second half, 11 in the final period, to aid the Buford victory.
