Buford unbeaten in region play

Juggernaut Jackets jolt Rams, 31-23

By Eric Rowell

CHESTERFIELD – The saying goes, a good defense will beat a good offense and the Buford Yellow Jackets proved that to be true Friday night when they handed the 10th-ranked Chesterfield Rams their second loss of the season, 31-23.
With the win Buford, 5-2, 4-0, sits atop Region IV AA after the surging Jackets’ fourth straight region win.
The pass-happy Chesterfield offense was stymied throughout the game by the stingy Buford defense. The Rams didn’t have an offensive score until five minutes left to play.

Size not a factor in AJ senior’s effort on defense

Allen plays big for Vols

By Robert Howey

KERSHAW – Dalton Allen plays big for the Andrew Jackson High School football team.
Allen, at 5-10, 130, doesn’t have the size, but that matters little to the Vols’ senior captain.
“I’ve always been a smaller player, but I try to make the best of it,” he said.
A quick look at his AJ athletic resume speaks volumes about his play, not just on the football field.

IL Warriors fall to Eagles, 20-0

PAGELAND – With South Carolina football teams facing a Friday night forecast of torrential rains from Hurricane Joaquin, Central High, along with many other schools, made the decision to play its scheduled game with Indian Land a night early.
It didn’t take the Eagles long to tally.
CHS, on the opening series, scored as Dedric Robinson dashed 70 yards down the water-logged field for the TD with only 29 seconds gone. The extra-point was no good and CHS led, 6-0.

AJ knocks off No. 6 Lamar

Phillips’ clutch FG lifts Vols

By Kim Roberts

LAMAR – Andrew Jackson sophomore kicker Bryce Phillips calmly drilled a clutch 25-yard field goal with 51 seconds left to culminate a gutty performance by the Volunteers at rain-soaked Lamar on Thursday, Oct. 1.
School officials decided to play Thursday in anticipation of expected heavy rainfall from Hurricane Joaquin and the rainfall of the century.
Lamar, a perennial powerhouse in Class A and ranked sixth in the latest Class A poll, was stunned as the Vols took the opening kickoff and ran 10:06 off the clock during a 19-play, 89-yard drive.

BHS spears 26-13 win

Jackets club Braves, stay unbeaten in region

By Eric Rowell

Friday night football became Thursday night football for all Lancaster County high school football teams, and the Buford Yellow Jackets took it in stride.
Buford played host to the Cheraw Braves on Thursday, Oct. 1, instead of its regular scheduled Friday night game, because of the record rainfall expected throughout the state.
The Yellow Jackets “soaked” their way to one of their biggest wins ever on the football field, a 26-13 victory over the Braves, 0-6.
