Payne, Johnson step up play

LHS duo is trench tough

By Robert Howey

Lancaster High senior defensive linemen Blake Payne and Rodrick Johnson are in the “step-up” mode at this point in the Bruins’ season.
Payne, a two-year starter at defensive end, and Johnson, a four-year starter at tackle, had their roles enhanced with the loss of senior star Markees Watts with a season-ending ACL injury early in the Bruins’ opener with Indian Land.
Lancaster won the game, but lost the star defender, a two-time Region III-AAAA and Tri-County Coaches Association Defensive Player of the Year.

Memorial Stadium legacy

Pettits hold 50-year football connection

By Robert Howey

The Lancaster Memorial Stadium golden anniversary marks something new, the debut of new grass on the field – the newly installed FieldTurf.
For a Lancaster High father-son, it goes a little deeper – something old and something much younger.
The newly installed FieldTurf, replacing the 49-year natural surface on the Memorial Stadium field, takes center stage, but for father Adrian Pettit and son, Drew Pettit, it goes a little deeper than the surface.

Barr Street battled Granard to 12-all tie

White recalls stadium opener as game of missed chances

By Robert Howey

Floyd White recalled the first game at Memorial Stadium as “the one that got away.”
White, an assistant coach to Barr Street High School head football coach W.C. Bill “Pap” Lewis, said he remembered the game on Aug. 31, 1967 for its squandered chances.
Barr Street, the then all-black high school in Lancaster prior to total integration, battled old rival Granard High School of Gaffney to a 12-all tie.

Warriors surge early, sack Cats

INDIAN LAND – Coming off two tough losses, it was clear that Indian Land

needed its most complete and cleanest performance to date to

secure its first win this season.

For the vast majority of the game, with the

exception of a little dip in the third quarter, that was the

performance the Warriors delivered in their 2017 home opener.

In doing so, the Warriors secured new coach Horatio Blades’ first win, a 37-13 victory over the Blacksburg Wildcats at the ILHS Reservation on Friday night.

Jackets swarm Bruins for 38-21 win

By Robert Howey

FORT MILL – The storm never came, but the Fort Mill football blitz did as the host Yellow Jackets swarmed the Lancaster Bruins early on the way to a stinging 38-21 win on Friday night at Bob Jones Stadium in Fort Mill.

Rain and stormy weather was expected, but it was the Jackets who hit the Bruins hard.

The Yellow Jackets ignited for 31 first-half points on the way to the 17-point win.

Lancaster battled back in the second half, but the Yellow Jackets’ earlier damage was too much to overcome.
