Lancaster girls close in on region title

Lady Bruins rip Stallions

Lancaster High School Bruins’ basketball senior night was a split, with the delight the LHS girls posting at least a tie for the Region III-AAA girls championship.
The Lady Bruins, with a torrid finish, roared to a 64-38 win over South Pointe in the varsity opener.
The LHS girls, the Class AAA defending state champions, can wrap up the region title – their third straight, with a win over the SPHS Lady Stallions tonight in Rock Hill.

Vols rebound, roll in rout of Rams

KERSHAW – After two frustrating losses last week, the Andrew Jackson High boys team was determined not to let that happen again Tuesday night in the Region III-AAA home game against Chesterfield.
The hot-shooting Vols jumped to a 30-15 first-quarter lead and didn’t slow down in the second quarter for 53-20 halftime lead.
Sophomore phenom Dontarius James had an incredible 32 points by half time, including six trays.
Even with AJ coach Danny Wright playing reserves a great deal, the Vols led 80-32 by the end of the third quarter.

IL takes two at BHS

Warriors sweep Jackets, keep region crown hopes alive

Indian Land swept Buford and kept alive its Region IV-AA basketball titles hopes with the Warriors’ two road wins over the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night.
The ninth-ranked Lady Warriors finished strong for a 47-33 win over the Lady Jackets and the IL boys followed with a tough 68-60 win over BHS to seal the sweep.
Indian Land, with the two wins at BHS, heads to rival Andrew Jackson for a pair of region hardwood showdowns with the Volunteers.
The boys game at AJ will decide the region crown, with the winner taking the regular-season championship.

LHS teams sweep South Pointe

Junior Bruins teams capture region titles

The Lancaster Junior Bruins’ basketball teams wrapped up Region III-AAA crowns with impressive road hoops sweeps Monday night at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill.
The Lady Bruins posted a 46-34 overtime win and the Junior Bruins notched a 45-37 victory in the second game.
The Junior Bruins, who finished 11-3, 9-1, were paced by Roshawn McGriff’s 20 points.
Ty Thompson netted eight and Majae Ingram scored six. Desmond Stowers hit five points.

Elizabeth Scott becomes Lady Vols’ all-time scorer

KERSHAW – Andrew Jackson High has a new queen of Lady Volunteers’ courts points.
Lady Vols veteran player Elizabeth Scott netted two second-half free throws in the AJ girls’ 61-37 win over Chesterfield to earn her the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Scott, entering the Tuesday game, needed 17 points to tie the mark, which was held by former AJ girls hoops star Lorraine Truesdale.
Scott scored 18 points, with her second foul shot on a second-half bonus free throw giving her the new mark.

Warriors sweep NCHS

Warriors notch two wins over Knights

Indian Land capped its regular-season home basketball schedule, cruising to a Region IV-AA sweep of North Central on Friday night.
The Lady Warriors, ranked eighth in Class AA girls, rolled to a 70-43 victory and the IL boys capped the hardwood broom job with a 108-60 win over the Knights.
The Lady Warriors, keeping pace in Region IV-AA play, took an early lead and steadily pulled away for the 27-point win.
IL led 20-11 after one period and held a 34-26 lead at the break.

Jackets continue hoops success with sweep at Central

The Buford boys basketball team capped a solid week on the hardwood, taking their third road win in four days.
The Jackets, on the road to Pageland, posted a 66-59 win over the Central Eagles on Friday night.
Buford was coming off a 62-60 road win over fourth-ranked Andrew Jackson on Wednesday night.
The Jackets’ seven-point win over CHS gave Buford a region sweep after the Lady Jackets notched a 55-51 comeback win over the Lady Eagles in the varsity opener.

Vols split with Cheraw Braves

CHERAW – Host Cheraw handed the Andrew Jackson boys their second straight Region IV-AA loss Friday night at the CHS gym.
Cheraw, rated eighth in Class AA boys, took a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, but AJ rallied for a 28-23 edge at the break.
The Vols were up 45-38 at the end of the third quarter and appeared to be in good shape to get the victory, but Cheraw’s outstanding point guard Zach Sellers took charge as the Braves outscored AJ 22-8 in the final period for a 60-53 upset win.

Teams keep pace in region crown hunt

LHS takes 2 from Jackets

Lancaster, hardwood road warriors for the week, came home victorious after a Region III-AAA sweep of Union County on Friday night.
The No. 2 Lady Bruins smashed the UCHS Yellow Jackets in a 60-21 win. The Bruins had a tougher time, but Lancaster prevailed for the 58-52 league win.
The Bruins used a late flurry to post the six-point win and stay on track in region play with one loss.
Lancaster, 12-6, 7-1, ignited to open the final period with a 10-0 run.

Penegar to play soccer at Limestone

INDIAN LAND – Indian Land High School girls soccer star Bailey Penegar is headed to Limestone College in Gaffney where she will join some former Lady Warriors’ teammates in the LC women’s soccer program.
Penegar said she’s looking forward to the reunion, but adds a former Andrew Jackson High School star soccer player played a key role in her decision to join the Lady Saints.
Penegar’s cousin is former AJ Lady Volunteers’ soccer ace Leah Kennington, who produced a banner soccer career with the Lady Saints.
