Catoe recalls Tigers' battles with Bama

By Robert Howey

Clemson battling Alabama is nothing new to former Tigers’ great Jimmy Catoe, who starred at old Kershaw High School under the late Bill Few before heading to play at Tigertown under the legendary Frank Howard in the mid-1960s.
For Catoe, a crackerjack linebacker in his day at Clemson, facing the Tide is old helmet, uh, “old hat,” akin to “Bear” Bryant’s familiar black and white “hounds tooth” cover.

Elf on the Shelf was a daily Yule reminder for us

By Robert Howey

This Christmas season when it came time to unpack the family decorations and ornaments, one we didn’t have to seek was our Elf on the Shelf.
He was already out and kept his familiar place, atop the clock on the den mantel.
Our elf, which my wife Anne got last Yule season, was a bit different, donned in University of South Carolina attire.
With a USC grad in the home, Caroline, along with a USC Lancaster student, Jackson, and their grandfather, the late Jim Howey, a USC grad and law school alum, don’t think a whole lot of explaining is needed.
