IL’s Williams signs to play volleyball at Ferrum College

Indian Land High School volleyball coach Tal Horton looks for Warriors' senior volleyball player Hayley Williams to make an impact at the next level.
“She will be missed at ILHS, but we know she will make a name for herself at Ferrum,” Horton said.
Williams, a three-year member of the IL volleyball team, is headed to the next level after signing with Ferrum College (Ferrum, Va.) in the IL media center on Thursday, April 30.

Wingate University honors Johnny Hammond

The late Johnny Hammond, a Lancaster native, was recently honored at Wingate University.
The mezzanine at the Wingate University football stadium has been named in memory of Hammond.
The dedication ceremony was held on May 5, 2015 at Irwin Belk Stadium where a plaque was unveiled in Hammond's memory.
An anonymous donor made a contribution to Wingate to honor Hammond who came to Wingate on a football scholarship after a stellar football career at Lancaster High School.

LHS needs 2 wins over host Lady Jackets

Lady Bruins rebound, face Union County

Lancaster rebounded to earn a diamond rematch with defending Class AAA state softball champion Union County High School on Monday, May 18.
Host Lancaster built an early lead and held on for an 8-6 win over Wren in a Class AAA Upper State championship series elimination game Friday, May 15.
The Lady Bruins, with the two-run victory, will travel to Union to face the Lady Yellow Jackets for the Class AAA Upper State softball crown.

Andrew Jackson punched its ticket to the Class AA state championship softball series in resounding fashion Friday, May 15 at the Lady Volunteers’ softball field.
AJ, 26-6, drilled 11 hits on the way to an impressive 9-2 win over Crescent High School of Iva for the Class AA Upper State softball championship.
The Lady Vols’ solid seven-run win advances AJ to the best-of-three Class AA state title series Monday, May 18 when coach Steve Middleton’s team faces Class AA Lower State champion Aynor High School.

Academic Magnet tops Indian Land 4-1 for Class AA soccer title

Academic Magnet scored three unanswered goals in the second half to snap a 1-1 deadlock on the way to a 4-1 win over the Indian Land High School Warriors in the Class AA state championship soccer match Saturday, May 16, at River Bluff High School in Lexington.

Raptors senior Reece Moore tallied three goals, two after the half to lift AM to its second straight state soccer title, the third in four years.

Moore scored the Raptors first goal at the 33-minute mark, but IL tied the match on Jaordn Szustwal's goal about a minute later.

Buford captures IV-AA crown

Jackets clinch region

The Buford Yellow Jackets clinched the Region IV-AA regular-season baseball championship with a 6-2 Region IV-AA win over Cheraw High School at Buford Park on Monday, April 13.
Evan Flynn, 6-0, hurled the win in five frames of work. He struck out eight and allowed two unearned runs, no hits and three walks. Trevor Cauthen worked the final two innings, allowing a hit and a walk. He fanned two.
Eric Miles led the BHS offense with two doubles, two RBIs and scored two runs. Brady Horton had two hits and scored twice. Druw Rollings drilled two hits and tallied a run.

Lancers battle Hurricanes

The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers capped their Region X road series, losing two games to Louisburg College on Sunday, April 12.
The Lancers dropped a pair of 5-4 losses to the LC Hurricanes.
Louisburg, facing a 4-2 deficit, rallied for three runs to take the one-run win in the nightcap Sunday.
Josh Shailer, in seven innings, took the loss, allowing five runs, seven hits, two walks and one earned run.
Tad Martin led the USCL offense with three hits, including a double.

Blackwell golf tourney May 2
The 14th annual Matt Blackwell Foundation golf tournament is set for Saturday, May 2, at the Lancaster Golf Club.
The shotgun start for the captain’s choice format is set for 1:30 p.m.
The entry fee is $65 per player, which includes the cart fee, green fee and steak dinner afterwards.
Prizes are $1,200 for first place, $800 for second place, and $400 for third place.
Prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive will also be awarded, along with a $500 putting contest.

Track has action-packed night

Lancaster Super Speedway featured some of the season’s top action Saturday, April 11, as the track drew its largest crowd for the young 2015 racing season.
In the USCS Sprint Car main event, the front row had Eric Riggins Jr. and Lance Moss. At the green flag, Riggins took the lead from Moss.
Riggins began to pull away, but behind the leader the racing was intense throughout the race.

LHS wins in 7th annual meet, with Buford 2nd

Bruins top in KLS field

Host Lancaster High School captured top honors for the seventh straight year in the Running for Ryan KLS county track meet at the LHS track on Saturday, April 11.
The Bruins, with a combined 164 points, topped the four-team field in the meet held to raise awareness for Klein Levin Syndrome.
The meet is held in memory of Ryan McKinney, a LHS graduate who ran track, but later died in 2006 of cardiac arrhythmia, which was caused by a missed diagnosis of KLS and over-medication. McKinney, at age 19, died two years after his LHS graduation.
