Man identified as 47-year-old Terry Louis 'Butch' Thompson

Dead gunshot victim found on E. Dunlap

A man was found shot to death on East Dunlap Street in Lancaster early Wednesday, and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office has identified him as 47-year-old Terry Louis “Butch” Thompson.     
Patrolling city police officers found Thompson lying on the ground about 1:17 a.m. near the intersection of East Dunlap Street and Thomas Lane. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was dead, according to a Lancaster Police Department release.

Mildred Arnold’s body discovered by her daughter Sunday

Man charged in wife’s killing

A 58-year-old woman's body was found by her daughter Sunday morning at a South York Street home, bludgeoned to death with a hammer, and her husband has been charged with murder.
Mildred Burris Arnold has been identified as the victim, according to the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
Matthew James Alman, 49, 213 S. York St., was charged with murder on Monday.
“There’s still a lot we don’t know because he’s not talking to us,” said Lancaster Police Chief Scott Grant.

Single-vehicle wreck kills Lancaster woman

A Lancaster woman was killed in a single-vehicle car accident late Sunday night on Great Falls Highway.

The woman has been identified by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office as 24-year-old Kasey Pepper. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Clemson, Auburn join to fight world hunger

CLEMSON – The two rivals faced off on the gridiron last weekend, but Clemson University and Auburn University are united off the field in supporting the World Food Programme’s efforts to defeat hunger.

“I am enormously proud that Clemson is exploring ways to join Auburn and WFP in our joint fight against hunger,” said WFP Executive Director David Beasley. “Defeating hunger is an enormous challenge, but if we tackle it together, we know this is a fight we can win.”

West Meeting power outage closes two county offices for the day

A Wednesday morning power outage in the Meeting Street corridor has prompted Lancaster County to close two offices and curtail activities at a third for the day.

The outages - impacting 7,800 customers - were fixed within three hours, said Rick Jiran, Duke Energy's vice president of community affairs.

Jiran said the outages were due to a transformer problem.

The Lancaster County Economic Department and Lancaster County Veteran Affairs offices, both in the 1000 block of West Meeting Street, are closed.

1st S.C. death from West Nile this year

COLUMBIA – An Anderson County resident has died from West Nile Virus, the first such occurrence in South Carolina this year.

In 2017, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has confirmed seven human cases of West Nile Virus, along with detection in 10 birds and 55 mosquito samples.

The risk of serious illness or death from West Nile Virus is low. Less than one percent of people infected develop a potentially fatal swelling of the brain, known as encephalitis.

Former TLN Publisher David Ernest dies at 65

David Ernest, who guided The Lancaster News as publisher for a decade, died Friday in Columbia after a two-year battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was 65.
Ernest came to the paper as publisher in 1992 from Florida, where he was advertising manager at a sister newspaper, the daily Citrus County Chronicle.
Susan Rowell, publisher of The Lancaster News, said it was a pleasure to work with Ernest during his 10 years at the paper.

BHS principal Miller moving to district job

Buford High Principal Rodney Miller is moving to the district office to fill a new position – director of career and technology education.
As CATE director, Miller will work to expand internships with local businesses, coordinate programs, and find teachers for career and tech courses.
Miller, a Pageland native, said he has mixed feelings about leaving Buford High, where he has worked for four years, three of them as principal.

1 rider dies at scene, another seriously hurt

2 motorcylcles collide in Elgin

Two motorcycles collided Thursday evening in the Elgin community, killing one of the riders and seriously injuring the other.
Fred “Butch” Newton Jr., 48, of Lancaster, died at the scene on Providence Road at Knotty Pines Drive. Justin Ellis, 32, of Lancaster, was transported by EMS to Carolinas Medical Center. He was in serious condition at press time.

Trying to check mailbox on Memorial Park Road

79-year-old dies after car hits her outside her home

A Lancaster woman was fatally struck by a car while crossing Memorial Park Road to get to her mailbox Thursday afternoon.
Johnnie Mullis Hinson, 79, was airlifted directly to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she later died from her injuries, according to Lancaster County Coroner Karla Deese.
Ke’von Drakeford, 17, of Heath Springs hit Hinson about 3 p.m. when she stepped in front of his 2000 Chevy Impala, according to Highway Patrol Cpl. Bill Rhyne.
