Gift card scam in Rock Hill leads to arrest of local trio

Rock Hill police arrested three Lancaster women last week for running a scam in which they returned stolen items to the stores they were stolen from in exchange for gift cards they planned to pawn.

Nelson sentenced to 20 years in prison

A Lancaster man who was arrested last December for choking his girlfriend and threatening to kill her was sentenced to two decades behind bars during a plea hearing at the Lancaster County Courthouse on Thursday, April 16.
Danny Nelson, 48, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Brian Gibbons to 20 years in the S.C. Department of Corrections after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and battery, according to a press release from 6th Circuit Solicitor Randy Newman.

The city of Lancaster is now among the nation’s best when it comes to providing fire protection to its homeowners and businesses, said city of Lancaster Administrator Helen Sowell in announcing the big news Thursday, April 17.
“Congratulations!” she said. “Under the leadership of Chief Chuck Small, the men of the Lancaster Fire Department have been recognized with an ISO (Insurance Service Office) rating of Class 1.”

Ladies’ Day Out: S.C. House, councils honor state champion basketball team

The Lancaster High School Lady Bruins’ basketball team was celebrated throughout the city and state this past week for its impressive 2014-15 season 27-0 record that culimnated with a AAA state title.
On Thursday, April 16, the LHS team was honored in Columbia on the floor of the S.C. House floor by Rep. Mandy Powers Norrell (D-44), an LHS alum.

Councilman pushes for speed limit signs on William Stevenson Road

RICHBURG – Richburg Town Councilman Albert Stewart Jr. has observed traffic speeding down William Stevenson Road and wants to have two speed limit signs installed there to slow down motorists.
Stewart brought the matter before Richburg Town Council at its April meeting.
Stewart lives on William Stevenson Road, which is in the Richburg town limits.

Former counselor at voc rehab in Lancaster named Fairfield magistrate

Dewese takes new path in life

FAIRFIELD – As a youngster, Johnny Dewese developed an interest in the judicial system and remembers pumping gas and bagging groceries at Raines Store in the Mitford community when Muscoe “Muck” Raines was county magistrate.
“He held court in the store,” Dewese said. “I was intrigued with the people who came in. I always had an interest in court.”
After graduating from Great Falls High School in 1969, Dewese went to work at J.P. Stevens.

County buys property for IL convenience center

Lancaster County closed on property Wednesday for a new Indian Land recycling and household trash collection center county officials hope to open later this year.
According to Lancaster County councilmen Larry McCullough and Brian Carnes, the 4.6-acre property is an undeveloped tract on Northfield Drive in the Perimeter 521 Commerce Park off Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521) behind the old Di Dee’s Diner.
McCullough said the county hopes to begin work on the site within the next two months with the goal of a third-quarter 2015 opening.
