The Magic Needle Quilt Guild won national recognition in the Hopes and Dreams Quilt Challenge for the most quilts donated by one group.
In July, nine members of the Magic Needle Quilt Guild traveled to Virginia Beach, Va., with 246 quilts packed in a truck and a van to donate to the Hopes and Dreams Quilt Challenge.
The members who took the quilts to Washington were Terri Harich, Brenda Marshall, Janet Nelson and her husband, Ron, Judy Phillips, Emma Thompson, Pat Ussery, Marjorie Vincent and Christine Williams.

Looking for some Fourth of July fireworks? You won’t have to look far. From neighborhood gatherings to professional fireworks shows, there’s plenty of fun nearby. Here are some area events:– Rock Hill is hosting Red, White and Boom at 5:30 p.m. July 3 at the Old Town Amphitheater on Black Street. The Heavy Sandwich and Sticky Fingers bands will perform until the fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. There will be a children’s area and refreshments.

The 48 teams that participated in the 2008 Relay for Life had exceeded the local goal before the first funnel cake was cooked on Friday night.Together, they raised $187,240.29, which will be used by the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research, along with cancer awareness and wellness programs.The goal for Lancaster County this year was $185,000, said Kimberly Gulledge, community field manager for the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society.“These teams should be proud of themselves,” she said.

The 2007 Relay for Life drew more a crowd in excess of 6,000 to Lancaster Memorial Stadium.The goal of the overnight event is to spread awareness of cancer prevention and treatments and cures while honoring survivors and raising money for research to find more cures for cancer.In 13 years, Relay for Life has grown into the county’s largest fundraiser.Relay coordinator Donna Parsons said the reason for such widespread support is obvious.“It continues to grow because people want to support the American Cancer Society and its researc

Doo-wop royalty will grace the Bundy Auditorium stage on April 26 when The Platters and The Marvelettes perform for the finale of the 2007-08 Performing Arts Series at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.
The show begins at 7:30 p.m. and some $45 tickets are still available at the box office inside the Bradley Arts and Sciences Building.
It is the second time The Marvelettes have come to USCL. They kicked off the inaugural performing arts series with a September 2006 concert here.
